Workshop on Adivasi Society and Culture of Jharkhand

28 - 30 July 2008

Participants

Dr.Shanti Khalkho

Opening session

Culture depicts  both the foundation and feature of any society.  This statement is particularly significant in the context of Jharkhand.  Culture refers to patterns of human activity and the symbolic structures that give such activities significance and importance.  In the context of India culture has a reciprocal relationship with socialized behaviour.  Social education and self-awakening refine culture.

Cultural awakening is the starting point to organize a society. Through this process Adivasis can consolidate, self-govern and become self reliant in many ways.  There is an inherent danger that adivasis do not  realize the importance of  culture and thereby jeopardize the existence of their being.

Vikas Maitri was founded  with the objective to organize and reunite all adivasis living in Jharkhand which is also essential for their development.  This unity is to be brought about by means of friendship and solidarity.  With this objective in mind Vikas Maitri during the last 35 years has been organizing seminars, workshops, meetings and is carrying out community development programmes.

Moving forward with this effort, an All Jharkhand Workshop was organized from 28-30 July 2008.  The topic of the workshop was “Adivasi Society and Culture of Jharkhand”.  Learned personalities of the community were invited to throw light on the situation under the banner of Vikas Maitri.

Cultural renewal and awakening are sure means of putting aside misunderstandings in the society resulting basically from the process of politicization.

In the workshop, more than100 leaders participated and contributed in the workshop.
