Globalisation Globalisation is often predicted as full of opportunities, advantages and awakened hopes for the mankind. The other face of globalisation which produces injustice, environmental risks and disillusionment is often treated as "collateral damages" in the necessary process. Some people also take a fatalistic world view that the process of globalisation is inevitable, why not cooperate with it. The system which no doubt produces inequitable distribution of wealth also makes available goods and services at a lower price to be affordable even to the poorest. In a developing country, however, the implications of globalisation are quite serious. The world order based on globalisation will bring about social, ecological and economic upheaval unprecedented in history. It may change the whole cultural and value system of a society, existence of which is based on those values. It will destroy the local economy in which people's livelihood and economic security are based. It will extinguish the common property rights of people by transforming the resources into cooperate monopolies (viz. TRIPs). It will have major implications on the decision making process of the local communities. And last not least, globalisation will turn democratic governance of countries into pseudo-democracies. |
